Here we go again! Type 1 diabetes is an underlying genetic condition that, when it encounters any of dozens of otherwise harmless immunological assaults (from coxsakie virus, to vaccines, to cow's milk, to a hundred other things), causes the already mis-programmed immune system to attack the insulin-producing beta cells.
Again, it's like trying to blame furniture with sharp edges for bone fractures among those with osteoporosis. The problem is not the furnitre (which is harmless to those without osteoporosis), but the underlying condition. Treating the underlying condition is where the research dollars should be going, not to identifying everything that can cause bone fractures in people with osteoporosis.
