Type in "hygiene hypothesis" and diabetes into a search engine. Whether it is freedom from pinworms, lack of exposure to childhood diseases, antibiotics, etc., there are lots of reasons why modern society is different from the days of old. Apparently our immune systems need practice, just like our brains.
