Yes, the debate continues.
We have a very happy, healthy, bubbly 14 yo girl who has been diabetic almost 11 years now. She is complication free (as far as tests can show), typically hits a HbA1c between 7 & 8, with BGL's ranging from 1.2 to about 14, though she normally runs between 4 and 12.
She is on two mixed injections a day and a fairly carefully controlled carb diet. Normally she will test (in the past we tested her) 2 or 3 times a day. Only very rarely will we test overnight, and only if there is some indicator such as illness that wakes her, or she wakes spontaneously.
I appreciate everyone's experience is different, but at least in our case Claire, by her own words, "loves her life". I'm sure all parents out there can relate to the pure joy of hearing one's child say that. (Even if it is just after she has played a trick on her older brother. ;)
Whatever may come in the future, Claire has an attitude to life that, so far, will see her triumph - not just manage. If my wife and I have had any part in creating that attitude by keeping the diabetes management at a livable level, then I am very proud. We can't change whether Claire will have complications, except perhaps at the margins, but we maybe can have an influence on whether she lives well, and just perhaps we have been able to achieve that.
BTW we both work full time, and both our workplaces know that if we get a call we go - and both places are cool with that.
