Given that some viruses are more able than others to induce an autoimmune response which can lead to diabetes, and given that viruses are communicable, diabetes may be communicable through individuals passing their diabetogenic viruses onto other genetically susceptible candidates. In guinea pigs diabetes has been documented to pass from one individual to another, possibly indirectly, via a virus.
One anecdote on this point is that my first girlfriend, whose family had never had a case of type-1 or type-2 diabetes, developed type-1 diabetes during our relationship. Was this a coincidence, or did I still harbor a virulent diabetogenic virus?
