No, Is wasn't being flip with the Scandinavian question. I think you didn't read it right.
If he owner and the buyer are both descended from Finns, then they both will have a greater than normal chance of having diabetic kids. Thus there is a greater likelihood of this kind of coincidence.
There is some evidence that viral infections may be involved in triggering type I diabetes in predisposed individuals, but none that it is communicable.
