We have known for a long time how to direct the diabetes research money: towards a cure! The problem is not with knowing what to do with the money, but with what is in fact done with it -- measurements of fingernail growth in type II vs. type I patients, compliance in Hispanic type I patients, the importance of the diabetes educator, etc. -- everything that will keep the diabetes research industry forever employed with no danger of finding a cure.
