While I too find it frustrating that they aren't too interested in diabetes, I remind myself that they are doing the work that many governments will not. They are truly making a tremendous difference in parts of the developing world where healthcare is truly scarce. There are a number of contagious diseases that claim far more lives every year than diabetes ever will.
I for one respect their desire to work on those problems instead.
Of course the way I see it, diabetes reseach is not terribly underfunded. It's just not utilized efficiently or directed to the correct research. Of course if we knew how to direct it we would have half of the problem solved already.
