I will offer up a commnet or two, beginning with that even my technology has cured diabetes with encapsulated pig/dog islets (though for less than 60 days at best). Second, I find it very interesting, but until the paper comes out, can be presented in this forum and reviewed, there isn't much to talk. Third, rats aren't especially immunocompetant and are notorius for the induction of tolerance (which doesn't seem to translate into humans). I'm looking for the dog data, or better yet Sun cured diabetes with encapulated pig islets circa 1995 in diabetic chimps for greater than a year. This is the data that will excite me! The immunological advantage is in a decreased response, not that the islets are substantially less immunogenic; they were put in an omentum pouch. This is not a new site for transplantation, as others have used it (i.e. Scott and Randy). The omentum itself is a barrier and decreases the net immune response when compared to IP transplants. Let us see them follow the Edmonton procedure and put their islets in the liver, where we can really evaluate their efficacy. It is hard to compare advantages when technology is languishing from a lack of investment. The bottom line is that ISM is a retrievable device, I can piggyback my device on the Edmonton protocol, and stem cells haven't accomplished much of anything. I await the diabetic chimp data as the most reasonable approach to evaluate a cure for diabetes.
