There was an interesting case a few years ago of a father in federal prison in the United States who wanted to donate his only remaining kidney to his daughter. The prison authorities were not sure if it would be ethical to make one person dialysis-dependent in order to make another person dialysis-free. I am not sure how the case was decided, but given the limited life expectancy of a donated organ, it is likely the donation would have meant a net loss in human health; though perhaps, if the father was willing to accept this, there would have been a net gain in human happiness.
