Buy a good brand at a health food store. The one I like is Jarrow Sustained Release 300mg. This is an anti-oxident which cleans out the sugar in his system. You might also consider a insulin pump. Counts dropped from 9.5 to 5.5 in only 6 months. Much more stable w/o the highs and lows. Another suggestion is to eliminate sugar! We only use diet soda and iced tea, as well as sugar free ice cream, jelly, etc. Also low fat foods like lean chicken, fish, veal and lots of grilled chicken salads. The combination has worked miracles! There are some things, like these ideas, that can make your sons condition much more livable until a cure is found. Good luck!
