Weakening of the immune system by massive doses of radiation was the first technique used to overcome the immunological barrier to kidney transplants in the 1950s, but as you might imagine, the cure was worse than the disease. Now it seems to be rearing its ugly head again. Chimerism occasionally appears spontaneously in patients who have had a transplanted organ for many years, and a better approach to inducing it artificially would be to study the processes by which chimerism naturally occurs and them imitate or encourage those in patients as soon as they receive a transplant.
