Anita and DWK: I recall seeing a blurb in Parade magazine about Halle Berry having Type 1 diabetes, but then being able to go off of insulin with the use of medicinal herbs. Luckily, Parade magazine emphasized that all Type 1 diabetics should be on insulin and in contact with their doctors, and not to just go off insulin and use herbs.
My own interpretation has always been that Halle Berry has Type 1B diabetes (a term used on the Children with Diabetes (CWD)website to describe a non-autoimmune diabetes that initially requires insulin but later does not). She collapsed and was found to be in DKA. Halle was put on insulin then later was able to go off of it. This is exactly how Type 1B diabetes is described, and it is most common in African-Americans. Just my own interpretation.
However, I believe it is extraordinarily dangerous for anyone to say that they have been cured of Type 1 diabetes. THERE IS NO CURE FOR TYPE 1A (AUTOIMMUNE) DIABETES. It is irresponsible and immoral to say there is a cure.
