Whether benfotiamine is available to you obviously depends on what country in Europe you live in. Since 1992, benfotiamine has been available in Germany as a treatment for vitamin B1 deficiency and has not been sold as a possible treatment for diabetic complications. This has only been suggested in various research articles, some published as early as 1990. More definitive proof that it stops development of complications in diabetic rats has just been published online a few days ago: see Hans-Peter Hammes, et al, "Benfotiamine blocks three major pathways of hyperglycemic damage and prevents experimental diabetic retinopathy," online publication on 18 February 2003 of an article to appear in print in the journal, NATURE MEDICINE.
You can buy this medication at any German pharmacy, where it is sold under the commercial name Milgamma Benfotiamindragees, manufactured by Woerwag Pharma & Co., Calwer Strasse 7, 71034 Boeblingen, telephone (07031) 62 04-0.
