I would support tracking if it is sponsored by funds that are not taken away for research... unfortunately - I'm sure there are bean counters who would find a way to include this kind of project as dollars spend in the search for a cure.
Maybe they should have added questions to the previous census that would have collected statistics about what has already happened... this could have sized up the impact of various diseases... then we wouldn't have to wait 'x' number of years AGAIN for some startling revelation - there are too many sick children (and adults) in this world... let's just cure it (and count the cured when that day comes!!)...
just a thought from a long time militant advocate of cure related research...
