My daughter has been diabetic for just under ten years, being diagnosed at three years old. We have been fortunate to be supported by very competent diabetic nurses and a local pediatrician (We live in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, a city of aboutr 50,000 people)

I have been impressed from day one that they have all been ready to support us in our development as managers of our daughter's diabetes. This encouragement has now led to a situation where we alter our daughter's dosage on an injection by injection basis, depending of course on her BGL and previous/expected activities. She is on two mixed injections per day (Actrapid & Protophane). This approach has enabled a consistent HbA1C of < 8 over the last couple of years and only one reading >9 in all her years of diabetes. We think this is pretty good, and while we always strive for better it helps us to feel we are doing all we can.

Of course, as our daughter is nearly 13, she is taking on more and more of her own management. Our experience to date should, we hope, enable her to do as well by herself in due course.

All of the above is so I can say - although the original post is rather burdened with babble, the concept of intelligent interaction with the principle care givers makes sense, and at least for us, works well. (BTW, we have never ben told that pre-puberty offered any protection, although I do remember reading it in one book that was loaned to us at the time of diagnosis.)
