Dear Ellen
Thank you for your email and feedback on the Sort it out! page of our Teen
Zone.
Diabetes UK has reviewed this section of Sort it out! and recognises that
the wording may have been ambigious, which wasn't our intention. We have
therefore made amendments to this text. We don't recommend a specific
number of tests each day, as we don't want doctors to then only prescribe
that number of strips, which would prevent people from testing more often.
We do recommend that if a person is ill that they test at least four times
a day and this has also be added to this section.
With best wishes

27/10/01 Subject: teens page - erroneous and
01:41 am dangerous information!
I was looking on your webpage Sort it out! and was shocked and horrified
that you are telling teens to test their blood glucose levels only once per
day and sometimes less. Where did you get this erroneous information?
Persons on insulin need to test their blood glucose levels far more
frequently than that. Shame on you!
At my fingertips Q How often should I test my blood glucose levels to make
sure they're under control? My fingertips are hurting where I do so many
tests at the moment. A There's no hard and fast rule about blood glucose
testing. Some people recommend twice a day, others less. If you've just
started on insulin, it's worth testing at least once a day to see how well
it's working. When things are more stable you might be able to test less.
The important thing is to check at different times of the day and
especially before taking exercise. Using different fingers each time helps
stop them getting too sore. But remember that blood tests are for your
information, not anyone else's.
Very sincerely yours,
