No, I wouldn't think tics are any kind of psychological manifestation, in general. I have a theory that any kind of genetic *or* psychological tendency that a child has, is significantly magnified in diabetes--due to a. blood sugars that swing and are not in normal range, and/or b. the management of the disease. Sometimes it is hard to separate the two. Your son is still young, and I am definitely guessing that the combo for him is the genetic tendency to have tics *if* his blood sugars swing (which of course they always do with Type 1). My daughter has a problem with being too perfectionistic. It is probably due to chemical changes in the brain due to management of the disease *and* blood sugar swings, which in total make her a little compulsive. But I wonder, without diabetes, would she be such a perfectionist? (and yes it does cause certain problems for her). No, I am guessing not. But I can't prove it. Like you, we just deal with it-- NOT chemically. Well, I say that, but she does need the thyroid medication. And yes, I have noticed that stress of any kind makes all this worse. One can't avoid stress, but there are more constructive ways of dealing with it-- humor being my personal favorite. My second favorite is music. Third favorite is just having a hissy fit and then getting on with it.
