I am just going to take a wild guess and say that most psychological manifestations of having diabetes are more likely to be from the messages "learned" by the child, rather than a directly related to blood sugars etc. Let me give this example-- my six year old daughter was sent to diabetes camp, and she came back with the T shirt "I'm in control." Now, what kind of a camp experience is that-- Be in control. Of course, she was taught that at home too, just without the T shirt. What kind of a way to grow up is that? Never once being able to let go!! How can one experience the moment, while, in the back of one's mind, mulling over, "when do I need to eat, am I high, am I low, I need to take my meter, where can I do my blood test" etc. etc. You all know the whole bit. What happens to a child that has constantly preached to her/him CONTROL. It probably comes out a little different in each child. But perfectionism is a possible consequence. I am always thinking creatively about this problem, and need to e mail Zen sayings to my daughter to combat this--"The one who is good at shooting does not hit the center of the target."
