An apology comes without more lies, diversions, excuses, blaming others, attacking critics, and bragging. It is a simple mea culpa by the guilty party made without reservation (not exactly my words, but I forget the wise person who made them). It also implies that the action your apologizing for (lying among other things) will not be repeated. At least that's what my mother taught me.
