THE links between diet, exercise and diabetes are to be studied in a Pounds 1 million project at Dundee University.

Professor Grahame Hardie will co-ordinate the three-year research into type 2 diabetes, which is believed to be becoming more common because of current "couch potato" lifestyles.

The work will involve five countries across Europe, where the disease is estimated to affect 15 million people.

It follows the discovery in Dundee 15 years ago of a process, protein kinase, which plays a key role in diabetes.
