The babies would not have needed life support forever, but would be brain damaged forever. Able to function but not fully. I would surmize that staunch pro-lifers would (should) argue that it is not a right of humans to rob these babies of "life"--even if it is not a good life--if they would argue that discarded blastocytes cannot be tampered with.
The situations *are* different...but parallel, IMO. One would be legal and one would not, if there was a broad ban by the gov't. And that would be a double standard.
