I think that INGAP probably induces the expression of neurogenin-3 since it is thought that INGAP recreates the steps in islet neogenesis. So, it may indeed be a more powerful step in the process that acts extracellularly. I can't really comment too much on how this is likely to translate to humans - I really don't know anymore than you do about it. It sounds promising, and theoretically plausible that such a growth factor would exist. The islet neogenesis field is really starting to take off. The last issue of Diabetes (Feb 2001) had a supplement (Birth, Life, and Death of a beta-cell in Type 2 Diabetes) which also has some articles on type I. The supplement isn't on the web site yet, but you could probably get it at a medical library. Nielsen J et al p. S25 has a table of the different hormones and growth factors which appear to regulate beta cell mass.
