I'm pretty excited. I just found out today that the NIDDK will probably fund a diabetes-related structural genomics initiative here at the NIH. The original multiple-lab proposal was submitted for type II diabetes. My understanding is that they were told today that the initiative would be funded, but only if it focussed on type I diabetes. I'm not sure how this is going to translate, but it's exciting. It means a lot of resources will be dedicated to type I, and it shows that the government is interested in pushing type I research to the forefront.
