Robin,
While I see such sessions as beneficial, I see it as a guise for the ADA.
Quoting from the TIF report, which I trust is accurate:
"Looking at the efficiency of ADA in funding research in FY1997:
ADA total revenue was $112 million
ADA awarded $15.4 million in research awards and grants
Of the $15.4 million invested in research, 65% was for training
Therefore, of $112 million raised, approximately $5.4 million was used to fund research (4.8 %) <<<<
The funding distribution chart below indicates that research is a minor part of ADA's activities. ADA provides excellent benefit to people with diabetes in other areas, especially their various information services. However, in seeking donations, ADA emphasizes research and finding a cure for diabetes. These statistics reveal clearly that a small fraction of any donation will actually be used to seek a cure for diabetes."
It is deceptive if they are hosting a conference for something they obviously don't believe in. It is also fundementally wrong to seek donations while emphasizing research and Cure when you are not using the money for research and Cure.
I see children used often in ADA publications and advertisements. These children are being exploited, IMO, because the ADA is not seeking to cure them. They need nothing less than a cure, and the ADA is not looking to cure them.
