Donna,

The apparent lack of insulin resistance and your low insulin production might put you in a category that is not typical Type 2, but not exactly Type 1 either? I'm not clear on what you mean by not being able to control your diabetes to satisfaction, but if you're taking max doses of glucotrol and still running high, it might mean that you are not on the most effective method of treatment. If your diabetes has always been characterized by low levels of insulin output, it may be that there's no extra insulin for the glucotrol to force out. I have met people who were in that boat. Most have felt much better and optimized their diabetes control by switching off to insulin.

Low carb diets are somewhat controversial. I've heard many people say that they can effectively lower their blood glucose levels this way, if they can stick with such a diet for extended periods. It is very difficult for some.

My blood sugar readings run high up to an entire week in advance of my cycle. As soon as it starts, I drop back down again. Dunno why this is, but it's certainly not uncommon.

Robin, age 39, Type 1 for 14 years
