Therese,
I have always considered ADA to be the host of the event. The Scientific Sessions are and always have been where everyone goes to find out about the newest and/or latest diabetes research. Program themes are centered around a diverse bunch of timely or hot topics in diabetes with top researchers and specialists presenting for their respective fields. If anything, I find it to the credit of the ADA that they are open to a number of researchers, posters, and presentations that they did not fund, direct, or have much of any influence upon. I would consider it wrong or deceptive if ADA were to only accept presenters if they agreed to present by an ADA script for their topic - this is clearly not the case as far as I can tell.
There is much devoted to industry symposia as well, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are not characterized by excessiveness and superfluity. But that's only a part of the bigger picture, IMO.
I'm not expressing myself so eloquently. Hopefully an actual person who has attended can say this better than me.
