Just read Houston newspaper article from Reuters News Service outlining Dr. Ammon Peck & colleagues,University of Florida, experiments using stem cells to reverse diabetes. My son's wife is 26, diabetic since age 9, and pregnant. She is beginning her 7th month and will have a C-section. My question is: can the stem cells from the umbilical cord be used for her benefit....i.e.,tissue transplant to her pancreas? Her diabetes is extremely difficult to control, has had laser surgeries on eyes, is now taking 3 different insulins daily. Is there any research in this area? Should these stem cells be preserved for use at a later date? Any information would be appreciated.
