Al--
I agree I am speculating, but let me tell you the root of my prejudice. The normal autoimmune process leading to diabetes is indeed slow -- usually taking years. But an identical twin transplant ("isograft" -- genetically the same as an autograft) is rejected by the autoimmune process in a matter of days and weeks. (This was a surprise to the surgeons that did it.) So my prediction is that islet neogenesis would turn out the same -- that is, quick rejection. But I would be not shocked if the rejectionw was slower.
