Linda -
I don't know of any definite reason not to stick the strip into the soda - I always figured that there was some sort of reagent chemical in the strip that changed color in the presence of sugar, and I don't know how much of it might leach out of the strip into the soda. My son uses a One-Touch II meter, and the strips for that have a fairly large test area on them. If we're eating out, we just save the test strip he used and drop a bit of the soda on the unused area.
It's surprising how often we get regular soda instead of diet. It's apparently easy to get the tubes crossed up in a lot of these big fountain areas, but we've also run into situations where the syrup is mislabeled.
What surprises me is that the chains can vary widely in how good they are about this - we've learned to be extra careful at Pizza Huts, for example, since they seem to foul up the most often (including having a manager in Florida tell me that since he was out of Diet Dr. Pepper, he had just hooked up a regular one instead -- he didn't think anyone would notice!).
