June 4, 1999

--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- A new drug, called anti-CD154, could be the first drug to really work for type 1 diabetics by preventing rejection in those receiving transplanted pancreatic cells (islets), according to a study conducted at the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami. The results, as released in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," reports that six out of six diabetic monkeys given anti-CD154 together with a transplant of insulin-producing cells became insulin-independent.
