Dear Sue:
I'm happy to hear that your conversion to "Pumperism" has gone so well. Not one of us "pump proponents" wouldn't trade the pump for a CURE in a heartbeat, but even if all the technological "quirks" were resolved today, the availability of that knowledge for every Type I diabetc would NOT hapen overnight! So, in the interim, I advocate insulin pump therapy in order to "approximate" as normal a lifestyle as feasible until a better means is available. My 16 yr old daughter, dx'd at age 9, awoke today at 10:30 with a bg of 90, made chocolate chip pancakes for herself & her sister, and was down to 140 three hours later when she & I stopped for lunch. She just checked at 4:00 & the turkey & cheese bagel sandwich for which she bolused 10 units was apparently adequately "covered", since she was delighted to see a bg of 104....Do I want to see my child NEVER have to deal with all of this ever again - of course, but for today, in February 1999, if this is as good as it gets, with an A1C of 6.9, I can accept that - all the while, continuing to do all we do as a family to further JDF's mission!!!
