Sandy:
I think your comments and disappointmnets are well observed and well founded.
Remember that this is a document that may/may not lead the way in future funding decisions.
I think sending a copy of your comments to Ron Kahn (expressing your disappointment) and Varmus and Nethercutt (expressing your reservations) is a good idea. Relying on advocacy groups is probably not enough action here.
FWIW, you are not alone in your frustration with the report. I share your concerns. I intend to highlight the positive aspects and do what I can to push those objectives along . But I will continue to look for opportunities to expand the narrowly defined path put forward in the report.
I was hoping that this document would be a "leading" document , one that we could depend on to set high goals and encourage science to reach for the stars. Although there are moments in it that ring true to these goals, we are still moving through behaviour modification, etc. How disappointing.
But I must emphasize that a DIABETES Research Working Group document is a major opportunity for all of us to have diabetes in the news and in the minds of the congress. It is up to us to make sure that we push for goals that we believe in as we examine and comment on the report.
As always your thoughtful analysis and comment is valuable and should not be limited to this forum. Please continue to express your opinion to the people who can make a difference .
