Mary,
We have two children both with DM. Bart was diagnosed at age 3 1/2 and Flo at 2 1/2 (because of the age difference, the diagnoses were 6 months apart). I believe their story can still be found on the Children With Diabetes Website (courtesy my wife!).
It's good to know you are not alone.
There seem to be two groups who frequent this website. Some are diabetics themselves and others are parents of diabetics. There seems to be a difference in the perspectives of these two groups, though we certainly share the same long term goal. In addition, there are a few with the distinction of being both diabetic themselves and having diabetic children.
We are all in this together. Do the best you can everyday. In all likelihood if you are conscientous (which I'm sure you are) and vigilant you will be able to avoid any acute disasters. Thus try not to succumb to overwhelming anxiety and fear. Enjoy your child. Even though he/she has DM, it is (and should be) only a small part of his/her identity.
Best Wishes for the New Year,
Alan
