Diabetes Research and Diabetes Care
Where do we stand?
Mayer B. Davidson, MD The mission of the American Diabetes Association, "to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes," can only be met by research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of diabetes (the first half of the mission statement) and by the medical
care of people with diabetes (the second half). Both diabetes research and diabetes care are receiving increasing attention as this century ends. This article will mainly focus on the amounts and areas of research dollars devoted to diabetes and the quality of diabetes care received by people with diabetes as we approach the millennium. I will also conclude with a personal perspective on the Professional Section of the American Diabetes Association..................................
