Hi Sandy,

I've always had the impression that the BDC is one of if not 'the' center for Type 1 diabetes treatment. Thier 250 page "Understanding Insulin Dependent Diabetes" manual was a godsend for us upon Trevor's diagnosis.

I receive their newsletter and feel that they are on the cutting edge of research. Complication studies seem to be on equal footing with Cure research.

This annual Hollywood fundraiser draws about as biggest of 'Big Names' that you can find (Jay Leno emcee, Dustin Hoffman, Don Rickles, Kelsey Grammer, Sylvester Stallone, Penny Marshall, Melanie Griffith, Antonio Banderas, James Woods, Raquel Welch, Rod Stewart, Tony Danza, Gerald Ford, Angela Bassett, Jane Seymour, and the list goes on..) All these people coming together for Juvenile Diabetes. PEOPLE magazine has a 4 page photo spread and article on the event this week.

I'm curious as to whether the disease is really touched upon at an event like this. Are these folks educated to the realities of Type 1 diabetes during the event, or is strictly a social fest? Either way, I certainly appreciate their presence and donations.

I also noticed the absence of mention of encapsulation research at the BDC website. This seems to be a trend lately, doesn't it? I don't know what to make of it.

Therese
