I certainly can't say that having my children develop diabetes was the best thing that ever happened to me (or certainly to them). However, it has definitely given me a personal sense of purpose (in contrast to the neurological diseases that I diagnose and treat, but are not suffered by any of my family members). Perhaps what Miss America meant was that developing diabetes has given her a focus and purpose; something she may have been lacking before.
