This has to be one of the most complex, cross-linked licensing and marketing deals I have ever seen. When you cut through it all, however, the message that comes through loud and clear is, "Despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars, we still do not have a continuous glucose sensor". Without such a device, the artificial pancreas will never happen.
Even with a continuous glucose sensor, an artifical pancreas will be an awkward, dangerous, expensive, and intrusive contraption. But unlike transplanted islets, it offers the massive advantage of generating thousands of dollars per year from every diabetic user throughout his or her lifetime. What a gold mine!
