Diane:

"Registry, to me, simply means collection of necessary data, monitoring, follow-up so the procedures can be improved. "

If only it were so. The registry proposed here is because we are to be deemed a heath risk to the general population. We could, at some point, in the future get PERV and could transmit it to the general population. If the risk became too great, we would be quarantined. Hence the lifelong requirement of testing of us, our spouses, and our children. In my humble opinion it has nothing to do with improving procedures. This is done in the clinical trial process.

What I think it has the potential to become is a giant scarlet letter we wear on our drivers license, passports, marriage certificates, etc. This would be fine if there was indeed a risk to the general population. But as I said before, if the risk were that great then there would be no transplants.

In 1900 the was an outbreak of the plague in chinatown San Francisco. The health department ordered a quarantine of the Chinatown area. In addition to the Chinatown area the home of chineese were quarantined based upon their assumed association with chinatown. No non-asian areas or homes were quarantined. Of course we now know that the plague is cuased by disesed insect bites that know no boundaries with respect to quarantines.
