Grace,
Please dont think that all companies that currently profit from glucose strips and meters lack compassion for diabetics.
I work in R&D at Boehringer Mannheim Corp (Now part of Roche Diagnostics). While we certainly have a large business in blood glucose testing, we are actively involved in the quest for successful islet transplantation.
Toward that end, we have developed new technology for the isolation of pancreatic islets (from human as well as porcine tissue). This technology (called Liberase purified enzyme blends) has radically changed the yield and quality of isolated islets leading to improved clinical research trials.
Furthermore, we are in constant communication with numerous other researchers (academia and industry) to further the promise of islet transplantation.
I follow this forum frequently, but have never posted a response. I just wanted you and others to know that we in the diagnostic industry do care and are working very hard toward common goals.
