Robin Harrison and I had the opportunity to be at the meeting of the Diabetes Research Working Group (DRWG) in Bethesda, Maryland yesterday (April 29). The meeting was a marathon, starting at 8:00 AM and finally ending after 9:30 PM. The DRWG was mandated by Congress to set the diabetes research priorities for the NIDDK through the year 2010.

We will post a summary of the meeting in a few days, but for now we wanted to let everyone know that NIH seems to be moving toward more real clinical research, and to support initiatives that will make a difference to people with diabetes. Although still primarily driven by the research community and mainstream organizations with almost no presence of ordinary diabetic consumers, the net effect appears to be positive. We will be vigilant to assure that these early apparent gains are not lost over time.

More to come...

Al
