Actually, if "we diabetics" used a bit more self control, we could keep our blood sugars under control. Maybe not all the time, but most. I have great little toys now. I have a super-consistent blood sugar monitoring device. I have different kinds of insulin, both fast and slow acting. If my blood sugar sucks, it's almost always because I screwed up. If you're 6 years old, or 11, you have a lot of valid excuses for out of control sugars. I'm 31, my wife is 33. We have 56 years of type 1 experience between us. I KNOW how my body uses carbs, exercise and insulin. I have my control down to a science. And I STILL screw up. My fault, mea culpa. Sorry to be such a downer, folks, but my kidneys are starting to go wonky, my eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lasers and I've got a couple dead spots on my feet. If I wasn't such a yahoo in my late teens and early twenties, I might be healthier now. Not a sure thing, true, but statistically probable. So, do we have the power to keep ourselves under good control most of the time? Damn straight!
