Randy,
You have done well! Diabetes Type1 or no diabetes, in time, you will hit the "age related changes" phase of life. Unless we seek funding for the fountain of youth and find it, there are those things we can not stop. The degree of impact is going to be varied, opinions are going to be varied and information is varied, based on studies I have read.
The best answer anyone can give, and this is not avoidance of an issue, is watch your control, watch your weight, watch your diet and have regular check-ups and screenings. It is to an extent, luck of the draw...you have been lucky, some children develop kidney failure within a few years and with good control while others with the same control do not....It is not black & white, clear cut data, unless I am undereducated in this area...There is research being conducted for genetic testing for predisposition to the complications at present..I think in clinical trials but I am not sure...check NIH projects.
God Bless & Good Luck...Keep a positive mental outlook!
