Can they not collaborate at least with a small group of individuals under some agreement wherein they are bound not to reveal any relevant information.
These group of people can in turn organize help for the effort.
Now am I talking sense? lets see..
Case 1:
In software a number of beta testers are often selected to test the software in early stage and report the bugs. This has become a standard practice and greatly reduces the marketing time for the finished product in addition to garnering free intenational testing under different conditions for their product which otherwise would have not been possible. They do not suffer any adverse marketing impact. rather it helps because more people come to know about the product.
Case 2:
A number of defense projects are often sub-contracted to private sector firms and still the secrecy is maintained by careful selection and screening.
The greatest incentive for these firms (researching for a cure in diabetes) is that they put out the finished solution earlier in the market.
JDF and others have spend years determining that proper control ensures lesser complications. Not isn't that a news?
The question is if a man/woman is lame which is the better solution:
1.Cure him/her of lameness by operation and make him/her fit once and for all.
2.Provide him/her a crutch for his/her whole life
It's for us to decide.
Lets move to see a cure and lets get together and achieve it.
We need to start some dialog with the existing companies and see what can be done and how we can move forward towards a collaborative effort. Most of us I am sure does not want any more reward than just to be able to cure this disease once and for all. Let money, fame, name and everything else be theirs to enjoy.
Please do come forward with your ideas.

PS. Combined effort have changed the world as we see it and it will again this time I am sure.
