Therese,
Type 2 DM cannot be ignored. Maybe it in some cases it does get ignored but it cannot go on being ignored without the person developing complications. Furthermore, because it's onset is not as severe as Type 1 many people go years without knowing they have it and sometimes a complication is the first symptom a person will see. Maybe this is what you meant when you said that Type 2 can be ignored? I do, however, get frustrated when all types of diabetes are bulked together as I have looked but have not yet found complication statistics exclusive to Type 1. And because we do not have a national registry for diabetes we can't even know for sure how many people have Type 1 diabetes in this country. How many different numbers has everyone seen? I have seen at least four. With a condition that affects so very many people you would think we would track it better. Of course, this would just take yet more money away from cure research and I am sure that no one wants to lose even a penny of that precious money. Diabetes, all around, is an ignored disease. It begins with, in many cases, a MISSED diagnosis and goes on to be a MISunderstood disease. I pray that the cure will not be MISSED.
