Drug companies are not evil, merely self interested. Sometimes the self interest acts to advance diabetes research, sometimes it can fail to act to advance cures. Thank God we live in a capitalist system where one company can fail to act and another see a profit opportunity. Thank God these decisions are not made by a state or a scientific committee. Don't look for the self interested companies to fund the work of the smaller start-ups. This is why organizations like JDF and others must maintain independence. If they take money from Lilly, or Novo or a monitor company they must still advance the research that will make these companies meaningless. If they do not then they have become an agent of the self interest these companies have.
As far as future problems after islet cells are successful, there has been no evidence of this in the primate studies performed by Tony Sun. If there is to be be future problems let us first cross the river and solve the smaller problems latter.
