I was wondering if anyone could help me with this...I'm having trouble finding much information about umbilical cord blood being researched for curing diabetes - although I caught a breif newcast about it being researched.
My daughter, Bailey, was just recently dx'd with IDDM on 9-8-97. She turned 2 on 9-28-97. I am pregnant with our second child, due in February. I discussed this with my OB who is going to look into the collection and storage part.....and thinks we would be prime candidates for doing so. She wanted me to also discuss it with Bailey's endocrinologist when we go next week. She did, however, point out that it might be costly enough (over the long term) that we may not be able to afford it.
What I'm looking for now is exactly how far they are researching this, and if it could ever be a possibility. I do not plan to have any other children (of course, this one wasn't "planned" either!), and if, in the next ten years, they do come up with a cure.....I want to have this put safely away for her.....
