All these trials will help define the potential risks. I just learned from Prof. Carl Groth from the Karolinska Transplant Institute in Sweeden that they are sending samples of plasma from patients who already received porcine islet transplants in Europe directly to the FDA in the US to perform a whole series of viral screening. It would be nice if other countries (i.e., Eastern Europe and China) could submit similar samples, since they already performed hundreds of porcine tissue transplants (as Tom mentioned).
