An interesting TV documentary about gang violence in East Timor screened here in New Zealand last night
(by Ross Kemp, "the Inside Story, gangs").
East Timor has a sad recent history, a brutal colonisation attempted by Indonesia, 1/4 of the population killed.Today many men are members of violent gangs. One gang, the "7-7" has a membership of over 30,000 men.(They outnumber the local military, and the Australian and U.N. peacekeepers combined).
The documentary showed rare footage of the 7-7 gang's ceremonial (obligatory) initiation ceromony. They are very religious, a strange blend of Animist and Roman Catholic.
For the ritual,A young pig is sacraficied and it's blood drained and collected. The initiates then receive from their priests many deep razor blade slash wounds, the fresh pigs blood is poured and rubbed into the wounds, then all capped off with a mound of "magic powder" (common dirt?)to hold the combined blood in.They believe this pigs blood will render them invincible from their gang enemies.
No infections or outbreak of disease from this practice has been reported.Presumably this has occurred at least 30,000 times, but possibly many more if this is an ancient practice. (are Any anthropologists or the like reading this able to inform further? Also is this ritual practised by any other cultures? I do hope David Cunliffe saw this documentary and was able to see the relevance.
