Australia- Rethink on transplants posted by Ellen
Hopefully, they will come to the conclusion that there are viruses that we can catch from other people as well as pigs and bats.
This does not stop us from getting transplants from humans and it should not stop us from getting them from pigs.
Test the donor before transplant. That seems prudent. We should test ALL donors for all known dangerous viruses before transplant, pigs or humans.
As for unknown viruses, well, everything has its risks. Those unknowns can be in humans too.
The question really boils down to: To transplant or not to transplant. Not if xeno is safe. No transplant is 100% safe.
HIV, Hendra and Nipah are already in the human population. And we did not need transplantation to accomplish that.
