Unfortunately, the encapsulated apprach is not ideal, either. The islets may be protected, but it won't stop the killer white cells from attaching themselves to the encapsulation material. In other words, it is expected that the insulin will not be able to exit the encapsulation because of attached white cells and that there will be development of lumps in the abdominal cavity from encapsulated cells with attched white cells.
If they can come up with an encapsulation material that the immune system does not consider foreigh, then there may be a chance that ti could work.
